FOMO

The NFL Draft is quickly approaching and general managers are reviewing their last-minute research, working on potential trades, and deciding where to place players on their draft boards.

The top of this year’s intriguing draft remains uncertain as there is no clear-cut number one pick. Among the highly ranked quarterbacks expected to be drafted in the first round are Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield, and Lamar Jackson.

Looking across the NFL, most teams drafted their franchise quarterback, so GMs in need of a QB know the importance of finding the right guy in the draft.

They not only want to maximize their draft position but want to make sure they don’t miss out on the next great quarterback. Based on the last couple of years, the fear of passing on a star like Carson Wentz or Deshaun Watson has intensified.

In 2016, the Browns traded their 2nd overall pick to the Eagles, which allowed them to take Wentz. Watson slipped to the Texans with the number 12th pick in 2017, while the Browns and Jets both passed on him.

As a result, there is tremendous FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) taking place. Even if a team believes there's a better player available at another position, they feel the pressure to grab a quarterback early. This leads teams to force a selection or even trade up because they are worried a QB won’t fall to them later.

While GMs wrestle with FOMO, we deal with something similar in our own lives. How often has social media revealed another person's "great" life and made us question if we're missing out? We might worry about not going on exciting vacations or not being invited to exclusive events or not making enough money.

This thought process can lead to working longer hours, becoming stressed out, and buying things we can’t afford. Fear can also set in about being able to pay our bills, or send our kids to college, or save enough for retirement.

FOMO takes on many different forms, but when we sense it creeping in, we must remember who we serve and who we can trust. When we follow Jesus, our fear turns to peace...worry to hope...and stress to joy.

Luke 12:29-32 (MSG) explains how we can trust God to provide what we need: “What I’m trying to do here is get you to relax, not be so preoccupied with getting so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way He works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how He works.

"Steep yourself in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Don’t be afraid of missing out. You’re my dearest friends! The Father wants to give you the very kingdom itself.”

Today, let’s be thankful for everything we’ve already been given and know that God is the source of love, life, and salvation. The only thing to fear is missing out on eternity with Him.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I confess I allow the fear of missing out to steal my joy and peace. Please help me to trust You to provide everything I need. I know You are good and faithful. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
