A Resurgence

It's almost been a full year since Tiger Woods tapped in for his 5th Masters' win, but the story continues to captivate us. Golf fans and general sports fans are still talking about what took place at Augusta and the return of Tiger.

Yesterday, CBS re-aired the final round and included fascinating commentary from Tiger and Jim Nantz. It will go down as one of the greatest and most memorable Masters tournaments.

When Tiger Woods won the Masters last year, it culminated a remarkable comeback. In December 2017, Tiger was ranked 1,199th in the World Rankings…and on April 14th, 2019, he became the second oldest Masters Champion.

People who hadn't watched golf in awhile tuned in on that Sunday and those who hadn’t picked up a club in quite some time were then motivated to try the sport again. Radio and TV hosts who don’t typically lead their show with golf did so on that Monday.

Tiger’s win and return to the top of golf and the response from the sports world can be summarized as a resurgence. Not only was it a comeback for him personally, but also the sport of golf.

A resurgence is defined as an increase or revival after a period of little activity, popularity, or occurrence. Its synonyms include the following: revival, recovery, rally, upturn, comeback, reinvigoration, reawakening, resurrection, reappearance, rejuvenation, and a new beginning.

These words describe the story of Tiger Woods, and yet how many of us need our own resurgence - especially with everything going on in the world right now? Many of us feel down and out and are waiting for a personal and worldwide revival, recovery, rally, and comeback.

Of course, we desire for our circumstances to change and need to be rejuvenated after these difficult past few weeks, but ultimately what we really long for is a deep and meaningful resurgence or a revival of our soul rooted in the resurrection of Jesus.

As we begin a new week following Easter, we must remember that His resurrection leads to our resurgence. His comeback provides our new beginning. His reappearance helps our recovery.

Since everything changes when Jesus is at the forefront of our lives, we don't have to wait for the current circumstances in the world to change before we experience a reawakening. He can reinvigorate our lives right now!

As followers of Jesus, the resurrection power of God is always available to us - especially in the midst of our challenging situations.

Romans 8:11 (NLT) tells us, “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”

Right now, God wants to revive us…restore us…and renew us. The Bible encourages us in Isaiah 57:15 (NLT): “The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: ‘I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.’”

Today, let’s be challenged to turn to Him so we can truly experience a resurgence in our lives.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, my desire is the same as the Psalmist when he says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me…This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your Word has revived me and given me life.” It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Discussion Questions for PACKS:
