Brady's Love For Football by Guest Writer, Bennett Rutherford

Tom Brady turns 41 years old in August. He holds countless quarterback records, including most Super Bowl wins (five). Competing year after year at the highest level, what he's accomplished is truly remarkable and deserves a lot of respect. Like previous seasons, the question is being asked as to whether or not Brady can do it again. Based on his age, many have doubted his ability to perform. However, he keeps proving them wrong by showing up in the Super Bowl. Will this year be the real end for the reigning MVP? In a recent interview with Oprah, Brady acknowledged that his time on the field may be coming to an end soon. He said, “I think about it more than I used to. I think I’m seeing that there’s definitely an end coming, sooner rather than later.” When asked whether that would be at 43 or 45 years old, Brady answered: “As long as I’m still loving it. As long as I’m loving the training and preparation and willing to make the commitment.” Brady’s response holds truth that applies to more than just football. When we love something we do, we do it better and for a longer period of time. One of the many reasons Brady has been able to continue such prolonged success is his love for the game. Without a love for the training, preparation, and film study, Brady wouldn't have been able to achieve such longevity in the sport. The same goes for following Jesus. Without truly loving Him and all that He stands for, we run out of energy in our faith. If our faith isn't rooted in our love for Christ, we are an engine running on the wrong fuel. We might be able to go for a little while, but sooner rather than later, we break down. The greatest commandment in the Bible tells us, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Deuteronomy 6:5). Jesus says in John 14:15 (ESV), "If you love Me, you will keep my commandments." When we fall in love with Jesus, it becomes more natural for us to follow His commandments. We love Him so much that we want to obey him. Because we find joy in communing with Christ, we are drawn to the discipline of prayer and the training of reading His Word. Instead of following Jesus because we feel like we have to, we follow Him because we love Him and trust Him with our lives. Regardless of Brady’s performance this upcoming season, his love for the game will always be a key reason for his long-standing success. Let us be encouraged to love Jesus with all of our heart...and trust that He will sustain us for the long run. I’m Bennett Rutherford and you can unpack that! Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for first loving me. It is from this love that all love originates. I pray that Your steadfast love sustains me and holds me. Help me to keep my faith by falling more in love with You. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
