Dealing with Doubt

Former number one draft pick, Andrew Luck, had an immediate impact on the Indianapolis Colts when he first entered the NFL. He quickly became an elite quarterback and anyone watching him play had extreme confidence in his abilities.

As impressive as his 70 regular season games have been, he’s also been sacked 156 times and his body has taken a beating because of his style of play.

Although Luck is tough and played through injuries, he eventually had shoulder surgery on January 19, 2017. Since that time, he’s been on a difficult rehab journey and missed the entire 2017 season.

While he was out, everyone wondered about his future - if he'll ever be fully healthy...if he'll ever play again...and if the Colts should move on and find a new quarterback.

At this point, he seems to be doing well and plays tonight in his second preseason game. However, as he continues to progress on the field, there are still doubts to overcome.

Will Luck play as well as he once did or has he missed too much time and been too banged up? How long will it take for the rust to wear off? Will he be able to play with the same style he used to?

These types of questions have taken their toll on him, but quarterbacks must play with confidence and mental strength to go along with their physical abilities. Luck is working through all of that as he attempts to complete the recovery process.

Just as Andrew Luck has personal doubts and unanswered questions swirling around him, doubt can also infiltrate our own lives. We all experience seasons of life where we question our inadequacies and deal with different types of pain.

If it goes a step further, we wrestle between doubt and faith and our perspective of God and our willingness to rely on Him is affected:

  1. Do we fully trust Him for our salvation?

  2. Do we believe He truly loves us and cares about us individually?

  3. Do we believe He’s in ultimate control of the world?

  4. Are we confident that He’ll show us the way to go when we ask for wisdom?

  5. Do we think He’ll answer our prayers when we seek Him?

The Bible says in James 1:5-8 (AMP), "If any of you lacks wisdom , he is to ask of God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him.

"But he must ask in faith, without doubting , for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind.

"For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways .”

A quarterback who wavers back and forth in the pocket, doesn’t trust himself or his teammates, and doubts his abilities, will end up getting crushed.

For us to avoid a similar result, we must remain upright, walking in faith and confidence as we place our trust in Jesus.

Today, let’s ask God for wisdom without doubting. Let's believe He’ll show us the way we should go because we know He is good and faithful.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I ask that You replace my doubt and unbelief with faith and confidence when approaching You. Help me believe in Your power and abilities to lead me and to provide me with wisdom. I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
