Do You Really Know Him?

This season, there will be three rookie NFL head coaches including Matt Rhule, Joe Judge, and Kevin Stefanski. When these coaches were hired, fans instantaneously reacted, responded, criticized, and cheered.

Being a loyal Panthers fan, I have enjoyed arguing and discussing whether or not Matt Rhule is the right guy for the Panthers. Admittedly, however, I don’t know that much about him.

Even so, I still have an opinion (I love the hire) as do other fans who are analyzing and predicting whether or not he'll be successful based on very little information.

There have also been strong opinions being thrown around regarding Joe Judge and the surprising move made by the Giants. Plenty of Giants fans are wondering about the direction their team is heading and questioning if Judge is ready to be the head guy.

Cleveland Browns fans know a little more about Stefanski since he was an offensive coordinator with the Vikings, but all of these coaches are relatively unknown to the majority of fans. These aren’t the big names or guys with previous NFL head coaching experience.

Although that’s the case, fans and media members still make bold proclamations about these coaching hires being either good or bad. Despite not having much knowledge about these coaches, we draw our own conclusions and make guesses about what their teams will be able to do this year and whether or not it was a good decision for them to be hired.

Taking a step back today, I realize there's no sense in making such judgments based on a limited amount of knowledge. After all, we don’t have a deep understanding of what type of coaches these guys are and we weren’t the ones spending time with them during the interview process.

Fortunately, there’s a lesson we can all learn from this. Knowledge is valuable, especially when determining whether or not a decision is the right one.

When we truly know God and His Word is deep in our hearts, we will have the knowledge we need to make the right choices and live a life that is honoring and pleasing to Him.

Proverbs 19:2 (AMP) explains, “Also it is not good for a person to be without knowledge, and he who hurries with his feet sins (misses the mark).”

When we spend time studying the Bible and praying, we gain knowledge, learn God’s ways, and can confidently trust Him and His character to lead us as our “head coach.”

Proverbs 2:6 (ESV) tells us, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

If we only base our understanding of Jesus on what others say about Him or what the media says (without knowing Him personally as our Lord and Savior,) we may draw the wrong conclusions.

1 Timothy 2:4 (ESV) says that God, “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Today, let’s seek knowledge, desire to know God intimately, and trust Him confidently to show us the right way to go.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I desire to know You more deeply and intimately. I want to know Your Word and Your character. Help me to make the right choices. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
