God and Buzzer Beaters

As sports fans, we thoroughly enjoy watching a tight game come down to the final seconds with a player hitting a shot at the buzzer for the win.

Last night, Collin Sexton nailed a floater after dribbling the entire length of the court with 4.4 seconds on the clock to give Alabama a 71-70 victory over Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament.

Sexton jumped from the free-throw line...released his scoop shot right before the buzzer sounded...and advanced his team to victory.

As much as we enjoy the thrill of seeing a successful buzzer-beater shot in the closing moments of a game, none of us like to experience our own situations that come down to the wire.

Unfortunately, we regularly encounter decisions, deadlines, and circumstances that force us to wait for an answer. We often have to wait until the final moments for everything to come together.

Even though we don't usually like the buzzer-beaters of life, God uses these final moments to test our faith and patience. We can trust in His goodness up until the time He delivers a miracle and then respond by giving Him all the glory.

When we claim the promises of God and understand His faithfulness while remaining in His will, we can be assured He'll show up in amazing ways. The timing isn't always as quickly as we would like, but He knows how to “hit the shot before time expires.”

Waiting until the end is never easy, but when God has given us a vision or clear direction for the steps we’re supposed to take, His deliverance comes right on time.

In the book of Habakkuk in the Old Testament, the prophet converses back and forth with the Lord. In response to one of Habakkuk’s complaints, God says in chapter 2, verse 3 (NLT), “This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”

Today, let’s reflect on the previous times God showed us His power and faithfulness by answering our prayers in His perfect timing.

While expectantly waiting for Him to come through again, let’s “Wait for and confidently expect the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; yes, wait for and confidently expect the Lord” (Psalm 27:14 - AMP).

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I place my trust and hope in You. I need Your strength as I wait for problems to be resolved, visions to come through, and miracles to take place. I know the clock ticking doesn’t rattle You and Your purposes are greater. I wait expectantly for You to move. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
