The PGA Championship teed off yesterday at Bethpage Black in New York. The storylines coming out of day one centered around Brooks Koepka’s record-setting round of 63 and Tiger Woods struggling at two over par.
However, one of the more interesting aspects of this year’s tournament is the actual timing of it.
Since 1960 (with the exception of 1971), the PGA Championship has always been the final of the four majors played each year. As golf fans, we’ve been used to watching the Masters in April, The U.S. Open in June, The Open Championship in July, and the PGA in August.
But that schedule changed this year and the PGA is expected to continue in May from here on out. The switch makes a lot of sense with May not being as hot as August, and hotter parts of the country now being able to host the event.
Even more importantly, there will be four straight months with a major championship and they all finish up before the football season resumes in the fall.
All around, the timing for the PGA has been well received by golfers and fans and seems to fit the sports calendar well.
Today, we all understand the importance of timing in life. When we look back at key moments in our journey we can see how amazing the timing was when it came to finding our spouse, getting the right job, selling our house, or having a baby.
On the other hand, some of us don't always agree with the timing and think things should have happened sooner. Many of us right now are in the middle of waiting and praying that God will answer our prayers. We’re battling back and forth between trusting in His timing and getting impatient because we’d prefer a shorter wait.
The challenge for us is to believe that God sees the full calendar and knows how all the “majors” fit together. He understands what needs to happen first and from His standpoint, the timing makes perfect sense.
We might not see it as clearly as we do with the golf schedule, but we have to surrender and trust that God knows what’s best. Oftentimes it will make total sense later on, but even if it doesn’t we have to believe that He is the sovereign God, and we are not.
In Acts 1:6-7 Jesus was asked, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.”
As we wait for His perfect timing in all situations, let’s remember to "Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us” (Psalm 62:8; ESV).
I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I’m sorry for being impatient and doubting that You know what’s best. Help me to trust in Your perfect timing and Your sovereignty. I know You love me and care about me and will work things together for my good and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
