Pounding the Table

Today is NFL Draft eve and teams are making last-minute calls, going through their evaluations one more time, and determining their final list of players they will target with each pick.

Then tomorrow, the fun begins as teams go on the clock to make their official choice of who they believe is the answer for their roster.

On NFL.com, Draft Analyst Charles Davis has an article with the headline: “2021 NFL Draft: 17 Prospects Charles Davis Would Pound the Table for.”

He explains, “Each year, every NFL general manager, scout, and coach has a personal list of favorite prospects -- guys to pound the table for when the clock is ticking and a decision must be made about which player to invest precious draft capital in.”

We may not know who those players are for other GMs, but Charles Davis shared his list of prospects. They aren't necessarily the most highly touted, but they're the ones he feels most passionately about.

Among those he'll strongly advocate during different points in the draft are quarterback, Trey Lance; running back, Trey Sermon; wide receiver, Simi Fehoko; and tight end, Brevin Jordan. Charles is confident about what these guys are capable of doing in the NFL.

I love this concept of “pounding the table” for certain players in a draft war room and can imagine a team considering their options while each scout makes their case for why a specific player is the answer. They most likely explain what they’ve seen, what makes him so great, and why they believe so strongly in him.

It makes sense you’d have to take a GM or scout more seriously when he’s enthusiastically “pounding the table” for one guy over another guy, and passionately defending why he'll make a bigger difference for the team.

What about in our own lives? What or who are we most passionate about and most willing to speak up and declare our allegiance for?

Are we more likely to “pound the table” and try to convince people of our political perspective...why our favorite team is going to win...why a certain TV show or restaurant is the best...and why our parenting techniques are superior?

Or, are we willing to passionately (humbly and respectfully) "pound the table" to tell others why Jesus is the answer...how He’s changed our lives...why He’ll make a difference in someone else’s...how much He loves us...how His Word is true...how we've seen His greatness...and why we so strongly believe in Him?

Hopefully, we're confident in who Jesus is and truly believe in what He’s capable of and why He, more than anyone or anything, is worthy to be the One we “select” to follow and surrender our lives to. We are then led to speak up, declare our allegiance, and advocate for Him.

1 Peter 3:15 (ESV) gives us this encouragement: "...but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as Holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…”

By "pounding the table," so to speak, we can confidently declare as Paul does in Romans 1:16 (ESV), "For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…”

Today, let's stand firm as Christ's ambassadors and boldly share the Gospel. Let's lovingly and graciously "pound the table" by telling others He's the answer and the One we truly need.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to passionately and lovingly share the Good News of Jesus with those who don't know Him. I pray I'd boldly and confidently declare how You've changed my life and why I so strongly believe in You. I pray I wouldn't be ashamed and I'd be prepared to defend why I'm filled with hope. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.Discussion Questions for PACKS:
