As fans, we know that ego, self-promotion, and arrogance are prevalent throughout sports - especially during postgame interviews and press conferences. So hearing or seeing coaches and players respond differently stands out and we take notice. Following last week’s convincing win against the Texans, there were two examples of this from the Baltimore Ravens. Their quarterback, Lamar Jackson is likely the league’s MVP this year (he had a strong performance last Saturday), but the small gesture he made in his postgame interview is worth noting. As he often does, he finished his interview with ESPN’s sideline reporter, Lisa Salters saying a simple, “Appreciate you, Miss Lisa.” It’s not a huge deal on the surface, but it’s fair to say this acknowledgment shows his respect for her and for the job she’s doing. Considering how many guys often disrespect reporters, I love that Lamar shows appreciation and recognition for who he’s talking to. In pointing this out, I hope we're challenged to always show respect and honor to the people we interact with. It’s easy to look down on others, blow them off, or not acknowledge those who serve us daily, but as followers of Jesus, we must stand out and be willing to make small (or large) gestures of respect and honor. Romans 13:7 (NIV) says, “Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” Ravens head coach, John Harbaugh also did something unique after last week’s playoff win against the Texans. He began his press conference by saying, “This is something that was said to me before the game, and it just is meaningful to me, so I’m gonna share it with you because I think it’s the right thing to do. It’s a verse (from 1 Chronicles 29:11, ERV): ‘Greatness, power, glory, victory, and honor belong to You, because everything in heaven and on earth belongs to You. The kingdom belongs to You, Lord. You are the head, the Ruler over everything.' There’s an amazing spirit on this team, and I just want to give honor and glory where it’s due.” This was bold and refreshing to hear and I appreciate Harbaugh’s humility and willingness to acknowledge God in that setting. As followers of Jesus, we celebrate and are encouraged when athletes and coaches give glory and honor to God after the game, but I wonder how often we choose to do the same in our own lives. Are we taking credit for wins, drawing attention to ourselves, and arrogantly talking about our accomplishments...or are we living in a way that points to Jesus as our source and King? Are we in humble submission to Him as we give Him all the glory and honor? Do we acknowledge that He is the ruler over all, and everything belongs to Him? 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV) tells us, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Psalm 29:2 (AMP) says, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty and majesty of His holiness .” Today, let’s be encouraged to be respectful of others and live in a way that acknowledges who God is. No matter if we win or lose, let's do everything for His glory, showing Him the honor He deserves. I’m Bryce Johnson, and you can UNPACK that! PRAYER: Heavenly Father, You are worthy of all glory and honor. I pray I'll live in a way that points others to You and they see You in me. You are Lord of my life and ruler over all and everything belongs to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
