As sports fans, we love to question coaches, general managers, owners, and players. We think we know what trades and free agents a GM should pursue. So, it’s especially fascinating to now look back at the way the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers’ rosters were built...and the decisions Dave Gettleman and John Elway made that were questioned by fans along the way. Remember how fans everywhere were yelling: “What, why would you release Steve Smith?!” “Don’t sign Aqib Talib or DeMarcus Ware - it’s too risky!” “The Panthers need to sign a veteran receiver to replace Kelvin Benjamin - Cam doesn’t have any wideouts to throw to.” “Peyton Manning won’t be healthy enough after neck surgery - keep Tebow instead?!” (Somebody yelled that, right?) In reexamining the different roster moves, in light of both teams heading to the Super Bowl, we realize that each one was crucial to their success (even the ones in question)...and that we should have trusted the decision-makers more than we did. Unfortunately, our questioning doesn’t stop with sports. We also question God when our life isn’t coming together with the way we think it should. We ask: “Why won’t God help me get that job?” “Why won’t our house sell?” “Why can’t we get pregnant?” “Why is God being silent?” After those seasons of doubt, it’s amazing to look back and see how all the pieces ultimately fit together with His perfect timing playing out. The Bible says in Isaiah 55 8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Today, instead of questioning God for not making the moves we think He should make, let’s trust Him fully and remember His faithfulness, power, sovereignty, and goodness. After all, before we know it, we'll be looking back (once again) and saying: “Ohhh, You knew best...You were right!” I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!
