Should Have Seen it Coming

It’s no surprise that the Golden State Warriors are heading to the Western Conference Finals, but winning Game 6 in Houston without Kevin Durant took people off guard. Durant was playing so well throughout the playoffs that some fans and media overlooked his teammates - especially Steph Curry.

Heading into Game 6, there was a heavy contingency of people picking the Rockets to win because they didn’t have the same trust in Curry anymore. He was doubted and questioned and following a first half in Game 6 where he scored 0 points, people seemed right to minimize his greatness.

However, Steph Curry responded in the second half by scoring 33 points, putting his team on his back, and finishing off the Rockets to win the game and the series.

He may have been silent in the first half, but he showed everyone what he’s capable of doing and reminded everyone just how exciting and dominant he still is.

Honestly, we shouldn’t have been surprised by his performance because we’ve seen him do this before. How could we doubt, overlook, question, and forget he’s a 2X NBA MVP and a 3X NBA Champion? After all that he’s accomplished in the past, we should have seen this coming because we know the kind of player Steph Curry is.

I’m not going to compare Steph Curry to God, but I am going to compare how Curry was viewed heading into Game 6 to how we view God at times.

There are moments or seasons in life when God seems silent and He’s not answering prayers the way we wish He would. This can lead us to doubt, question, and overlook His greatness. We minimize our trust in Him and start believing He’s not who we thought He was.

How easily we forget everything He’s done for us and His incredible power and majesty that are all around us. Then when He does end up revealing Himself and answering our prayers in an amazing way, we wonder what we were thinking.

We ask ourselves, why did we doubt His goodness and faithfulness? We're reminded that He always comes through by showing us how much He loves us and how He turns bad situations into good.

If today we find ourselves doubting God’s existence, questioning His silence, or wondering if He’s not as great as He used to be, let’s cling to these verses.

Romans 1:20 (NLT) gives us this assurance, "For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”

Psalm 19:1 (NLT) tells us, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship."

Hebrews 13:8 (NIV) says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Today, let’s be filled with confidence that the God we serve is worthy to be trusted and praised and there are reminders of His greatness all around us.

Also, “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep His promise" (Hebrews 10:23; NLT).

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I’m sorry that I sometimes forget how powerful, great, and faithful You are. I pray I wouldn’t lose hope, but continue to trust You because of Your nature and character. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
