The reigning college football champions, Clemson Tigers, start a new season tonight as they take on Georgia Tech.
After a dominating championship performance against Alabama and with key players returning this year, Clemson sits at top of this season’s rankings.
Not only are they considered the number one team right now, but it’s also fair to say they are the center of the college football universe.
Teams across the country recognize they’re going to have to go through them in order to be champions, while many programs are attempting to emulate how Clemson has been built.
They have won 36 of their last 39 ACC games by an average of 21 points and they send top players into the NFL draft each year. Clemson has proven to be reliable and they’ve consistently lived up to the hype.
As fans or media, it’s hard to talk about college football without Clemson being a big part of the focus. It starts and ends with them because they are the standard and the preeminent college football program right now.
In considering Clemson as the center of the college football universe, let’s be challenged to consider who or what is at the center of our own universe.
In our minds, does the whole world revolve around “me”? What is at the center of our lives - our job, family, status, money, fun, or dare I say sports? What is the focus? What is the standard? What is preeminent?
With all of that in question, let’s take a look at what the Bible says about Jesus being at the center of it all.
Colossians 1:15-20 (NLT) explains, "Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through Him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth.
"He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdom, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him and for Him.
"He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together. Christ is also the Head of the Church, which is His body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So He is first in everything.
"For God in all His fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through Him, God reconciled everything to Himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.”
Jesus is the center of the universe and He sits on top as number one. Everything that’s good and right goes through Him. It starts and ends with Him.
He is the standard and the one to emulate. He is reliable and always lives up to the hype.
As we think about this today, let's ask ourselves if He's really our number one focus. Can we honestly say that He's at the center of our “universe” where everything is about Him and goes through Him?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing me to know Jesus. I believe He is supreme over all creation and I'm thankful that His sacrifice provided my salvation. I pray He'd be the center of my life and that everything would revolve around Him. I pray this in His name, Amen.
