"The NFL is the Great Revealer"

Over eight years have passed since Tim Tebow played for the New York Jets, throwing eight passes and rushing 32 times.

Since then, he played in the 2013 preseason with the Patriots, began his broadcasting career with ESPN, played in the 2015 preseason with the Eagles, and played minor league baseball with the New York Mets organization from 2016-2020.

The former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback has had an inspiring, disappointing, incredible, and highly polarizing career. Now at the age of 33, Tebow appears to be heading back to the NFL as a tight end, playing for his former Florida coach, Urban Meyer.

With the news of him expecting to sign soon with the Jacksonville Jaguars, of course, there are strong opinions, vast emotions, and a plethora of predictions regarding the outcome.

There are also a lot of questions swirling around such as these:

Has he been out of the league too long?

Is he really going to block anyone as a tight end?

Will he be a distraction?

Can he really make an impact on the team by switching positions?

Will Tebow’s athleticism and work ethic lead to a regular-season roster spot?

Yesterday, when Fox Sports Radio host, Doug Gottlieb, and Charles Robinson from Yahoo Sports were questioning and wondering how things might turn out for Tebow, Robinson reminded everyone:

“Oh, we’ll find out. I mean that’s the great thing about the NFL. It is the great revealer. This will not be left up to question. Whatever he’s going to be, we will see very quickly...The NFL is the great revealer. We’ll know pretty quickly what Tim Tebow is or isn’t, or can or can’t be.”

Robinson is right. Once Tebow steps onto the field and lines up at tight end, we’ll be able to see clearly whether or not he’s doing what an NFL tight end needs to do.

He'll either be exposed as not being able to block and catch passes...or he’ll confirm that he’s a legit player who is doing exactly what's necessary to be a tight end.

A player can’t hide for long and as Robinson said, “The NFL is the great revealer.”

The same is true for us when it comes to our faith journey because God’s Word is the great revealer. It not only reveals His truth, His character, and His way, but also exposes, convicts, confirms, and shows us who we really are.

Hebrews 4:12-13 (NLT) says, “For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable.”

The Living Bible translation puts it this way: “For whatever God says to us is full of living power: it is sharper than the sharpest dagger, cutting swift and deep into our innermost thoughts and desires with all their parts, exposing us for what we really are. He knows about everyone, everywhere. Everything about us is bare and wide open to the all-seeing eyes of our living God; nothing can be hidden from Him to whom we must explain all that we have done.”

When we read or hear God’s Word, it reveals the truth and shows us our brokenness and need for a Savior. We are fully exposed before God and He knows our hearts and whether or not our faith is real and if we’re obeying His Word.

It also brings to light the areas of our hearts we still need to surrender and align with Him, the sins we need to confess, and the aspects of our character we need God to transform. The need for healing and restoration becomes evident, so we allow the power of God’s Word to work in us.

As we realize “God’s Word is the great revealer,” let’s place our faith and hope in Jesus and choose to obey. Let's seek to have a heart that proves to desire after Him.
