Time for a Reset

The college football coaching carousel has been wild with recent hirings, firings, and resignations at the top programs in the nation. Throughout college football, there are 23 head coaching changes, which include ten in the Power Five conferences.

The list includes coaches who are either starting a new job or finding themselves out of one such as, Lincoln Riley, Brian Kelly, Ed Orgeron, Jim Mora, David Cutcliffe, Dan Mullen, Butch Davis, Justin Fuente, and Gary Patterson.

Today, I want to focus on the schools themselves and specifically the ones that chose to make a change at head coach because they weren’t happy with this year's results, the current status of the team, and the direction things were heading.

When we look at the moves from the perspective of programs like USC, Florida, and Virginia Tech, the athletic directors, boosters, and fans who influence these decisions make it clear the team needs a reset. This allows for a realigned vision, a new identity, changes to the culture, a fresh perspective, and different emphasized priorities.

Over the coming years, we'll see how each reset works for these programs that handed over the keys to a new coach.

As the year comes to an end, and we start thinking about the opportunity for a fresh start in 2022, many of us require our own “reset” in life. The definition is “to set again: to set, adjust, or fix in a new or different way: to reset priorities.”

Each of us has areas of our lives that need to be adjusted or fixed and similar to the college football teams, we aren’t happy with this year's results, our current status, and the direction things are heading.

I've come up with an acronym (below) that will hopefully help us RESET our lives, along with scriptures that can encourage us as we do.

Rrealign your vision

What does God want for our lives and what is He asking us to do? Does the vision we're pursuing align with His?

Proverbs 3:6 (NLT) tells us to "Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take."

Eembrace your identity in Christ

Oftentimes, we get off track because we forget who we are and Whose we are. As followers of Jesus, we have to reset and embrace the truth that we have been made new as a child of God.

Ephesians 4:22-24 (NLT) encourages us to "...throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy."

Sshift your priorities

What is most important in our lives and have the wrong things been our focus this year? What do we need to emphasize instead? Matthew 6:33 (AMP) implores us to "...first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness , and all these things will be given to you also."

Eexamine what changes need to be made

What aspects of our lives and walk with Jesus need to be adjusted? We must pray and ask God to reveal the necessary changes we need to make and what next steps to take.

Lamentations 3:40 (ESV) says, "Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord!"

Ttransform your attitude and perspective

We need to reset our attitudes about life and perspective about circumstances. Instead of being so negative, we must saturate our minds and hearts with Scripture and remain surrendered to God so we can do what Romans 12:2 (NLT) says:

"Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

Today, let's ask God to identify where we need a "reset" in our lives, and let's allow Him to change our hearts as we give Him the "keys to the program."

I'm Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please show me the areas of my life that need to be "reset" and reveal to me the next steps I should take. Thank you for Your transforming work in my heart. I pray my vision, priorities, attitude, and perspective would remain aligned with You. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
