The Patriots and Eagles have earned their way to the Super Bowl with hard work, talent, execution, and teamwork. They are well coached and each team has proven they have what it takes to win.
But beyond all the cliches and the obvious reasons these teams are so good, the one element that drives them toward success is trust.
Players begin their hard work in the offseason while they trust their efforts will pay off once the season begins. They must trust the coach notices their talent, and puts them in a strong position to perform well.
The players must trust the coach's game plan each week, and trust their teammates to do their job, so the plays are executed properly. A quarterback trusts his wide receiver to catch the ball...his offensive lineman to protect him...and his running back to find the holes.
The coach has a certain level of trust in his offense, which is revealed in the play-calling. The amount of trust a coach has for his defense determines key decisions in 4th down scenarios.
I can go on and on explaining why trust is the foundation for so much of football. The reality is, teams can have talented athletes and an accomplished coach, but without trust, they won’t win at the highest level.
The Eagles made it to the Super Bowl because they trusted in their backup quarterback, Nick Foles, which was demonstrated by their aggressive play-calling during the Vikings game.
In our own lives, trust is rooted in many of our decisions and plays a part in our feelings and emotions. When we trust in our abilities at work, we gain confidence in our performance and peace about the job we’re doing.
Our marriages must be built on trust in order to live in harmony - free from worrying and questioning. Friendships thrive when we trust in each other's support - knowing we want the best for each other and are always there when needed.
Ultimately, trust is most powerful when placed in Jesus because we can trust our eternity is secure...His plan is the best...His way leads to true life...and our sins are forgiven. We can trust that good can come from difficult situations, and trust His faithfulness will get us through anything.
Psalm 37:5 (ESV) encourages us to “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act."
Whenever we allow emotions like disappointment, anger, worry, doubt, and discouragement to creep in, we are really expressing a lack of trust in God. We aren’t counting on Him to deliver and strengthen us, but rather placing our hope in the wrong things.
The writer of Isaiah 26:3-4 (ESV) says, "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”
Today as we think about the Super Bowl matchup, and the importance of each team operating out of trust, let’s consider our own need to trust in the Lord with all of our hearts.
Let this verse found in Psalm 112:7 (ESV) be true of us today: "He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.”
I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please help me keep my life rooted in a deep trust in You. I know You are good and faithful, and an everlasting rock. I pray my mind would stay on You, so when situations get tough, I’d rely on You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
