Walk the Talk

The New England Patriots have had countless players come and go throughout their dominant run with Bill Belichick in charge. He’s done a phenomenal job of creating a culture and system that results in winning.

Those affiliated with the Patriots speak and act in a “Patriot Way.” When new players come into the locker room they understand things operate differently, and they must distinctly represent the Patriots when interacting with the media.

Mike Florio wrote an article for ProFootballTalk.com about former Browns defensive tackle, Danny Shelton, joining New England. Florio’s opening line reads, “One of the most important aspects of playing for the Patriots is sounding like a Patriot. New defensive tackle Danny Shelton already has that down cold.”

Florio shares some of the quotes from his introductory conference call where Shelton demonstrates “Patriot-patented” replies and wraps up his article with this line: “So it’s on Shelton to show that he can get it done. At least, for now, he can speak the part.”

Clearly, one of the first steps to embracing New England is communicating the “Patriot Way.” But, to really thrive there has to be more than just talking the talk.

In regard to our faith journey and desire to follow Jesus’ way, we are called to communicate differently and represent Him in all we do and say.

All too often, however, we stop at “talking the talk” and struggle when it comes to our walk lining up. We may know the right spiritual answers or church cliches to make others think we have it all together, but our true actions are in opposition to our words.

On the surface, we may sound good, but deep down our hearts and lack of obedience to God prevent us from walking the talk.

1 John 2:6 (MSG) challenges us when it says, “If someone claims, “I know Him well!” but doesn’t keep His commandments, he’s obviously a liar. His life doesn’t match his words. But the one who keeps God’s Word is the person in whom we see God’s mature love. This is the only way to be sure we’re in God. Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived.”

A New England player can talk the “Patriot Way” for awhile, but the charade won’t last unless there are clear results on the field. As followers of Jesus, His way leads us to a genuine life of love and obedience.

Jesus says in Luke 6:46 (ESV), “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” Today, let’s not only talk the talk but truly walk the talk.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray that my words would match up with my actions. Help me know Your Word and how to communicate the gospel to others so that my love and obedience are evident as I follow Your way. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
