Warriors Flip the Switch

The Golden State Warriors have won two of the last three NBA Championships, and before the 2017-18 season began we assumed they would make it to the Finals once again.

However, their effort and play during the regular season weren't as convincing as in years past. They dealt with injuries, different lineups, and a lack of motivation.

Despite their topnotch talent and extraordinary abilities, they definitely didn't play like the team we’re used to watching. Coach Kerr even questioned if they really cared about winning because of their lazy defense and failure to box out in games down the stretch.

But then the first-round playoff series began!

On Saturday night against the Spurs, the Warriors dominated 113-92 and played like the competitors we know them to be.SFGATE.com perfectly put it in their headline: “Warriors ‘Flip the Switch’ in Game 1 Rout of Spurs.”

Taking their winning more seriously, the Warriors have finally stopped their coasting. With the ability to "flip the switch," they revealed they were holding back during the regular season and are still the team to beat in the playoffs.

The reality is, the Warriors can turn it on and off when they want to and choose whether or not to put forth maximum effort. But even though this “flip the switch” mentality sometimes works in sports, it isn’t the answer when living a life committed to Jesus.

If our desire is to please God, we can’t be okay with turning our faith on and off depending on the day of the week or who we’re with. We must check our passion and love for God if we think we can just “flip a switch” and follow Jesus when it’s easy and convenient...and not take it seriously other times.

When we experience God’s love and grace in a profound and genuine way, we won’t want to flip the switch toward sin and our former way of living.

As followers of Jesus, the literal flipping of a light switch makes us aware of remaining in the light with the switch turned on – no matter what the situation.

By God’s grace, the switch is flipped to the light of Christ within us when we receive Jesus into our hearts.

The Bible says in John 8:12 (ESV), “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

1 John 1:7 (NLT) tells us, “But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.”

Today, let’s stay in the light and stop flipping the switch on and off. Let’s remain faithful to God’s leading by remembering the promise in Ephesians 5:8 (NLT): “For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!”

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray that the light of Christ would shine through me and I would consistently walk in it. I pray I wouldn’t just turn my faith on and off or only flip the switch toward You on certain occasions. Thank you for Your grace and for strengthening me to remain in the light. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
