Over the years, the Seattle Seahawks have been well known for their dominant defense. It has taken them to the Super Bowl twice, winning once. 5-2 this season, their defense has been stout at times but also unreliable in some of their games.
As they rank 20th in the NFL in points allowed, linebacker Boby Wagner (one of their defensive leaders), isn’t okay with such an up and down performance.
Wagner said this week, “I think the consistency is where I would love to see us improve. Week in, week out, you know what you’re getting, everybody’s on the same page. That’s what I feel the great defenses are."
They are consistent. I think what we need to improve on is getting more sacks and having more game-changing plays or turnovers from the D Line, to the linebackers, to the secondary. We all need to do a better job of kinda making those plays, helping the offense out, giving the ball back to the offense.”
In the NFL, having a consistent defense that can be relied on as the foundation of the team, is very valuable. When the defense does what it needs to do week after week, instead of being tough one game and then weak the next, the overall team is set up to succeed.
Consistency is also crucial when it comes to our own lives and our journey of faith. Do other people find that our lives are consistent with what we say and what we claim to believe?
Are we reliable and dependable and “week in, week out, you know what you’re getting?” Or are we up and down, all over the place, and inconsistent depending on the day?
If we truly want to be consistent, then we need to remain grounded and rooted in Jesus because He’s the One who is ultimately reliable and dependable.
Isaiah 26:4 (NLT) encourages us to “Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.”
In order to improve our consistency, we have to follow the One who never changes. Hebrews 13:8 (ESV) says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
We become steadier and more stable when we’re consistently seeking Jesus and relying on Him to be our foundation and our strength. When we do, then we can live out the challenge in 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT):
“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”
Great defenses are consistent and make game-changing plays. Today, let’s consistently follow Jesus so we can experience life-change in ourselves and in others.
