Why Don't We Ask?

I’m looking forward to watching the new HBO documentary, Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching. Both Bill Belichick and Nick Saban are fascinating guys (whether you root for them or not) who have had very accomplished coaching careers.

ProFootballTalk.com has already written an article about one of the interesting comments Saban made during the documentary. There is footage of Belichick asking Saban about the best players on his Alabama team who he could potentially draft.

Saban names two players and shows that he's willing to offer insight when asked. Nick later explains in a conversation with Bill during the documentary that his advice or recommendations don't have to be exclusive to him:

“One thing that you do, that a lot of the NFL guys don’t do, I don’t know that you’ve ever picked one of our guys if you never talked to me before picking him.

“And there’s a few other guys in the league that do that. But then there’s another 30 teams that I never hear from, and then they pick somebody and I’m saying, ‘They picked that guy?’ or whatever.

"And then they say, ‘Well, we didn’t know this.’ Well, all you had to do is call and I would have told you the good stuff and I would’ve told you any issue.”

The article sums it up this way: “Saban says in the documentary that he’s candid with NFL teams who ask about his players, but most NFL teams don’t bother to ask.”

This really is crazy to hear about when you consider the number of Alabama players that get drafted each year. If you're an NFL team, wouldn't you want to hear from the one who has as much insight and wisdom about players as Saban does?

It's fair to wonder in a similar way, why we don't take full advantage of asking God for wisdom and insight before making decisions. It's so easy to get caught up in our day without pausing and approaching the One with the answers.

Instead, we make poor choices, do something hastily, or go a direction based on our own limited knowledge.

Thankfully, we have access to a God who is more than willing to listen when we ask and provide the wisdom we're seeking.

James 1:5 (ESV) tells us: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."

We serve an all-powerful, generous, and all-knowing God, so why are we like so many NFL teams that "don't bother to ask?"

Amazingly, God has abundantly more to give us even beyond wisdom, but we're too distracted or prideful or foolish not to seek Him and ask Him.

John 15:7 (ESV) explains, "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you."

John 14:13-14 (ESV) says, "Whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in My name, I will do it."

God is willing and open to answering our prayers when we're walking with Him, desiring Him and pursuing His will. He has so much to show us, tell us, and give us...we just need to ask!

I'm Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me the wisdom to help me make decisions that are pleasing to You. I pray I would be confident and obedient to approach You constantly and ask boldly. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.

What struggles or doubts do you have when you boldly ask God for something in prayer?

Why is it so crucial we abide in Him and ask in His name?
