Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but the Green Bay Packers have underachieved in recent years. As a result, management has hired Matt LaFleur (former offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans and the LA Rams) to replace Mike McCarthy as their head coach.
This is a big change for Rodgers at this stage in his career - especially after playing a particular way for so long. There's a lot of pressure on him and his new coach to get on the same page for maximum success.
Agreeing on the direction of the offense is paramount, but they’ve already had to work through some conflicting ideas based on comments from the star QB.
Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk commented on the concerns being raised by Rodgers: "It also represents the first indication of something other than unconditional and unequivocal submission to the new offense that LeFleur has brought to town.“
At the core of the issues is LaFleur’s playcalling strategy. Instead of Rogers being able to have multiple audible options at the line of scrimmage, the offense is designed for him to stick to one of two plays the coach has called.
Even though Rodgers is used to changing plays based on what he sees when he steps to the line and looks at the defense, he's now expected to follow his new coach's plan instead.
As great as Aaron Rodgers has been, he has to believe in the direction his coach is leading him and the team, and be willing to submit to what is being asked of him.
This idea of "unconditional and unequivocal submission" also plays out in our lives as followers of Jesus. When we give our lives to Him, we have to trust and believe that His direction and "playcalling" is what is best for us. We can confidently say,
"Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path"(Psalm 119:105; NLT).
When we surrender to God's leading, we're willing to submit to what He's asking us to do instead of relying on ourselves to call an "audible" and go our own direction.
We declare, "Make me know Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths" (Psalm 25:4; ESV).
As Aaron Rodgers attempts to be in sync with his head coach and take the steps to submit to his new offense, he's going to have to put aside pride and selfishness.
Likewise, when we submit to Jesus and His "offense" for us, we must remember that He says, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me" (Luke 9:23; ESV).
Every day we choose either our way...or His way! I'm Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I'm sorry for always wanting to call the plays in my life and for the times I've called an audible instead of doing what You asked me to do. I know Your way is best and I trust You to lead and guide me. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
Discussion Questions for PACKS:
1. When you look back, what are some examples of times you knew God was leading you a certain direction, but you called an audible instead?
2. Is there something in your life right now that God is clearly asking you to do, but you're struggling to stick with the play He's calling?
