Will Cam and the Panthers Change?

Cam Newton was the NFL’s MVP in 2015, and carried the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl. His production took a dip last year while battling injuries, but he returns tonight for his first preseason action after a shoulder injury.

Although he’s a big and talented QB, Cam also takes a pounding on the field because of his style of play.

ESPN's David Fleming noted this stat in a recent article: “Since he was taken No. 1 in 2011, though, Newton has led all QBs with 3,566 rushing yards while getting hit or sacked an astounding 922 times -- roughly 10 times per game. By comparison, Tom Brady was sacked only 15 times last season.”

In order to preserve Newton's health for a long career, the Panthers have taken steps to surround him with new players that can help the offense be more dynamic. They have to protect him, while also switching up their play-calling.

As the Panthers make these changes, it’s up to Newton to adapt well and make his own adjustments in how he plays. Fleming's article has the headline, “The Panthers Need Cam Newton to Change. Can He?”

Head coach, Ron Rivera, spoke about their new strategy to help Cam and why they added certain players through the draft and free agency, with this explanation to Fleming:

“So when we say the word 'evolve,' these are some conscious things we had to do to change; these are things that we have to do better to give ourselves a chance to be successful.”

In general, people have a hard time changing from what they’re used to, so seeing how different Cam and the Panthers play this year will be intriguing. We'll all be wondering how much resistance will take place, and how long it will take to embrace the new strategy.

When we discuss the concept of change, especially in regard to character and life, we shouldn't buy into the lie that people can’t change. Of course, there's a process involved as people move on from their previous ways, but it can happen with patience and the belief that it’s possible.

Most importantly, for life change to take place in any of us, there needs to be a transformation of the heart and mind that is rooted in the power of God. When someone surrenders their life to Jesus, and begins to follow Him with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, a person can amazingly become brand new.

When we submit to Jesus as Lord of our life, our interests, responses, thoughts, and actions change. We no longer seek our old way of doing things because we know God’s way is much better, and He wants to change us from the inside-out.

The Bible says in Ephesians 4:21-24 (NLT), "Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from Him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy." As Cam and the Panthers make the effort to change on the field, let’s pursue the proper changes in our own lives. Today, let's take the necessary steps to let go of our unfruitful ways and allow God to transform us...so we can thrive with a new strategy and approach to the life God has called us.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for the changes You’ve made in my heart and mind. I pray that I’d continue to surrender other areas in my life for You to transform. I know I can’t change in my own strength, but it’s by the power inside of me. Help me to also believe that Your power can change those around me when it appears impossible. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
