Yeah, But...

Former Ohio State quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, was drafted 15th overall in last night’s NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He has the opportunity to be their next franchise quarterback with Alex Smith being injured and veteran QBs, Case Keenum and Colt McCoy, not likely long-term solutions.

Not only did he end up in a favorable situation, but he'll also be playing for his hometown team - near his family in suburban Maryland where he went to high school.

Haskins even has somewhat of a history with the Redskins since he went to school with the owner’s son. He had this to say about it:

"It's cool that his son went to my high school and I know his son. It's just crazy how small this world is and how you meet somebody and that can change your life.

That's why I make sure I treat people the way I want to be treated, and I've got to do all I can to make sure that I leave a lasting impression on people. I think that's Mr. Snyder thought that I was the guy for this franchise. I'm just really excited for the future."

Yeah, it’s an awesome story and a great perspective...but Haskins wasn't drafted until 15th overall. He turned out to be the third quarterback taken after Kyler Murray went to Arizona and Daniel Jones surprisingly went to the Giants. Teams like Denver, Cincinnati, and Miami could have taken a quarterback, but decided not to.

So Haskins, who finished third in Heisman Trophy voting last year, had to wait longer than he wanted to hear his name called and was led to say, "I'm more motivated than ever, there's a bigger chip on my shoulder, the league done messed up."

Of course, he feels like teams passed on him, but he'll be better off focusing on the amazing opportunity he has with the Redskins and not worrying about who didn’t draft him.

When we think about our own lives, many of us far too often fall into the trap of saying, "Yeah, but...”

On one hand, we’re excited about an opportunity or thrilled about an answered prayer and then still end up dwelling on the “Yeah, but...”

Yeah, I finally got the job, but it’s not as big of a salary as I hoped.

Yeah, we’re pregnant, but it took longer than we wanted.

Yeah, we just moved into a new house, but our neighbors are not ideal.

It seems like we’re never completely satisfied or truly thankful, and we struggle to remain positive without adding on caveats. As followers of Jesus, contentment, and satisfaction are available. When we focus on the blessing-giver more than the actual blessing, we can remain thankful and overwhelmed with joy. Blessings may even let us down, but the Blesser is all-sufficient.

In Christ, we have been given grace and salvation that we don’t deserve - not to mention each breath and countless other things we take for granted each day. Instead of being greedy or worrying about what we lack, let’s choose to be content and rest in all we do have because of God.

1 Timothy 6:6-8 (AMP) says, "But godliness actually is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment . For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it, either. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content."

Today, let’s stop at “yeah” and get rid of the “buts” - even when we think we should have been “drafted earlier.” Let's focus on the wonderful place we find ourselves...and believe that Christ is enough.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I know that Your plan and timing are better than mine. I pray that I would trust You when things don’t turn out as well as I thought. Please help me to focus on everything I do have instead of what I don’t. Forgive me for being so greedy. I believe that Christ is enough for me. In His name, I pray, Amen.
