  1. NFL’s Lip Service

The Carolina Panthers are 0-1 to start the season, and the discussion following their first game has centered around the reigning MVP taking too many hits to the head without the defensive players being penalized. Cam Newton is strong and tough and an extremely unique quarterback, but the concern has been raised that he is being unfairly treated by the refs, based on the brutal hits he took against the Broncos. We know that football is dangerous and physical, but with the NFL front office talking so much about player safety…

  2. Overreaction Monday

The first Sunday of the new NFL season was exciting and in many ways surprising. I was thrilled to see the Raiders win on a 2-point conversion, and psyched about Carson Wentz playing so well for the Eagles. We witnessed a few teams disappoint, and many players impress, so today we’ll hear many bold statements on “Overreaction Monday.” This happens each week during the season, but especially after the first games. We jump to conclusions and begin declaring that Jimmy Garoppolo and Dak Prescott will permanently replace Brady and Romo sooner than later. People will say that the Giants are…

  3. The Missed Field Goal

The Carolina Panthers played a very good game against the Denver Broncos last night. Being in the lead for most of the game, it appeared they would pull out the win. However, when a late surge put Denver out in front, the Panthers needed to hit a 50-yard field goal to leave with a win. Unfortunately, Graham Gano’s kick went wide left and the Panthers lost their 2nd straight game to the Broncos. Graham Gano had this to say after the loss: “I’ve got a lot of games left. I had a lot of…

  4. It’s Not About Me

The NFL returns tonight and I can’t wait for the new season to get underway. Throughout the off-season, we heard about the big contracts that players signed, the rookies expected to contribute, and the guys looking to take the next step into stardom. We debated who is the best at each position and decided which players we wanted on our fantasy team. With so much emphasis on individual players, athletes easily become me-focused and make it all about them. Of course, they want to make sure they get paid bonuses, avoid big hits, keep…

  5. Texas Wins: Skeptic to Believer

This past college football weekend was filled with great games and surprising upsets, including the 50-47 double-OT game with Texas knocking off No. 10 Notre Dame. Texas has been a strong football school for many years, but they struggled toward the end of the Mack Brown era, which led to the hiring of head coach Charlie Strong. When a team hires a new coach, football fans display a level of skepticism until things fully turn around. However, there are those who have more hope when they believe the University made the right choice in putting their…

  6. One Week at a Time

As Labor Day weekend comes to an end, we close the door on summer and welcome fall with open arms – it’s football season! The schedule shows which games our favorite team should win and some fan bases are already planning their trips to a Bowl game or the Super Bowl. There are other fans that look at their team’s schedule and wonder how they will win a game during a tough 4-week stretch midway through the season. Looking at future match-ups and the possibilities for a successful season is always fun, but all year long…

  7. These Games Matter

Last night was loaded with plenty of football games to watch. On one channel you had the NFL preseason (those games didn’t really matter), but on the other channels you had meaningful college football action during week one of the season.  Every game that took place in college football last night matters and affects the postseason. If a team loses week one, their chances for making the playoff or a bowl game could be ruined. Opening day or week one in other sports like baseball, basketball, and hockey are fun for fans, but…

  8. I Love My College Football Team

College Football is back! This is such an exciting time of year for fans across the country to be hopeful that their favorite team will have a successful season. When the team we root for is our alma mater, we are naturally optimistic about their chances of winning. Most of us view our team through a positive lens, even when most outsiders don’t. On September 1, 2007, I was an Appalachian State University student sitting in “The Big House” when the Mountaineers pulled off the biggest upset in college football history. Knocking off the 5th ranked Wolverines was an unbelievable day, and I will never forget witnessing “my” team’s…
