  1. “My Game is Vulnerable”

Although in the middle of football season and the baseball playoffs, I’m still intrigued by the possibility of Tiger Woods returning to competitive golf. I’m holding out hope that he’ll make a dramatic comeback and show glimpses of his former dominant ways…but that may not be very realistic. Just this week he withdrew from the Safeway Open and Turkish Airlines Open – two events he was scheduled to play. On his personal website, he wrote this: “After a lot of soul searching and honest reflection, I know that I am not yet ready…

  2. David Ortiz Beyond the Plate

David Ortiz played his final game for the Boston Red Sox earlier this week, ending a legendary career with three World Series victories, 10 All-Star Games, and considered one of the best-designated hitters of all time. While embracing his farewell tour, even his final season as a 40-year-old proved memorable and productive. Ortiz is one of the most beloved players to ever wear a Red Sox uniform, and the respect for him goes beyond the field. In 2005, the David Ortiz Children’s Fund was founded with the sole purpose of saving children with…

  3. Where is the Panthers’ Winning Spirit?

What is wrong with the Carolina Panthers? How can a team only lose one game during the regular season last year, and now only have one win in the first five games this season? Last night’s game wasn’t much better as they fell to the Bucs at home in Charlotte. On the surface, it’s easy to diagnose their problem as a lack of talent or playing too many young players in their secondary. Some of the issues may be injury-related or maybe the coaches are calling the wrong plays. However,…

  4. Protecting the QB

The NFL is a quarterback-driven league and teams dream of getting a guy they can build their franchise around. However, one of the most under-appreciated elements to a successful quarterback and a winning franchise is having a trustworthy offensive line. Having a unit that protects the quarterback from defensive attacks is crucial. Defenses strategize all week long to rattle the quarterback and take him out of the game. The job of the offensive line is to prevent defenders from getting to the prized QB. Interestingly, at this point in the season, the teams who…

  5. Missing the Big Game

One of the things I love about being a sports fan is engaging in conversations before and after big games. Pregame I enjoy back and forth discussion about story lines…and postgame I like to debate reasons the team won.   When someone asks if I am watching “the game” and then tell them “no” because of another commitment, I feel let down. If they go on to say they can’t understand why I would miss such a huge game, I feel even worse. A similar feeling comes over me when…

  6. Couch to the End Zone

After being signed by the Seattle Seahawks before their game against the New York Jets last week, running back C.J. Spiller went from his couch to the end zone. Spiller was watching the NFL on TV one Sunday and scoring an important touchdown the next.  Having an impressive college career at Clemson, Spiller was a top draft pick by the Bills, but injuries held him back from being a consistent game-changer in Buffalo. Although he spent last year in New Orleans, things never clicked and he was released earlier this season. With the Seahawks in need of…

  7. From 0-2 to 2-2

The Buffalo Bills are a hard team to figure out at the moment. They started the season 0-2 and their defense was embarrassed on national TV against the Jets. However, they have won two straight in convincing fashion against the Cardinals and the Patriots. That’s the story of the NFL season so far. Teams have looked terrible one week and great the next, or dominant against a certain team and then surprisingly struggle against another. It feels like an up and down roller-coaster ride at times, but the key is…

  8. USA Wins With Bubba On Their Side

Team USA won the Ryder Cup over the weekend, defeating Europe for the first time since 2008. Being selected as a player to compete for the country is truly an honor…and as a golf fan, the unique team format and intense rivalry provide a thrilling event to watch. One of the more intriguing storylines surrounding the Ryder Cup was Bubba Watson being left off the team as a player, despite his No. 7 ranking in the world. While picking the players, Bubba was passed over twice by USA’s captain Davis…
