The sports world lost a legend on Monday with the passing of 71-year-old Bill Walton. Having been an extremely well-liked man, we’ve witnessed an outpouring of memories and tributes from his friends and fans.
When sports figures die, I read and listen closely to the common words used to describe who they were and the life they lived. Of course, Bill has been described as “one-of-a-kind” with a “unique personality,” but people especially appreciated his “zest for life.”
NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver commented, “But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events — always upbeat, smiling ear to ear, and looking to share his wisdom and warmth.”
Golden State Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr said, “His incredible energy, passion, love, and zest for life was never turned off.”
The Boston Celtics organization stated, “As a Celtic, Bill overcame years of debilitating injuries, regained his zest for the game, and helped guide the 1986 Boston Celtics championship with both his play and his spirit.”
“Zest” is defined as “great enthusiasm and energy,” which sums up Bill Walton well. He enjoyed life, people, basketball, music, and broadcasting. Bringing his “zest” (passion, joy, excitement, delight, and exuberance) everywhere, he will be greatly missed by the sports world.
Hearing the sports world react to the news of Bill Walton with stories about him, allows us to be inspired by his zest for life and consider how we can live with similar enthusiasm and energy.
Do we view each day as a gift and as an opportunity to live with passion?
Do we get excited about the people we meet and the experiences we encounter?
As followers of Jesus, we have so much to be joyful and grateful for. We should live daily with a “zest” for God, the new life He’s given us, and the eternal life to come.
We smile and enjoy life because we know Psalm 16:11 (AMP) to be true: “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.”
We have a profound reason to exude “great enthusiasm and energy” because Jesus has saved and continues to change us, and we live with the excitement of being victorious in Him.
We also delight in God with our exuberance rooted in His love for us and in our love for Him.
Philippians 4:4 (AMP) says, “Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, take pleasure in Him]; again I will say, rejoice!”
Psalm 63:3 (ESV) declares, “Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.”
Also, we desire to obey and serve Him with “zest.” Romans 12:11 (NLT) tells us, “Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.”
Ephesians 6:7 (NLT) implores us to, “Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”
Today, let’s live with “zest” and bring “great enthusiasm and energy” into the lives of others as we follow Jesus. Let’s ask Him to give us the lasting joy only found in Him. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
