I have great memories of spending my summers at the pool as a swimmer, lifeguard, and coach. Although I’ve been on a diving board countless times, I hate to admit I’ve never been able to do a flip. With this fundamental feat out of my reach, I’m blown away when I watch what the Olympic divers do in the air.

I’m especially impressed with synchronized diving – a must-see if you haven’t already watched this extraordinary event. Seeing two people dive, flip, twist, and land in the water at the same time is astonishing! It’s hard enough to do a flip on your own (at least for me), let alone in sync with someone else.

I was thrilled that the USA Men’s synchronized 10m platform duo, David Boudia, and Steele Johnson, took home the silver medal. (I was also encouraged to hear them speak boldly about their faith in Jesus.)

During this event, the pair of divers attempt to take the same steps at the same time, and completely rely on each other to move in the exact way. Their goal is to have a strong sense of trust and unity.

Watching synchronized diving got me thinking about “synchronized living.” Each day we choose whether or not we want to live like Jesus by taking the right steps, waiting on His timing, following His moves, and placing our complete faith in Him.

Bad timing or a diver deviating from the plan doesn’t end well in synchronized diving, and we get a similar result when we rush things or get in the way of what God is doing. We must remain in His will and walk as His spirit leads us.

The Bible says in 1 John 2:5-6 (NLT), “But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love Him. That is how we know we are living in Him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.”

Galatians 5:16 (NLT) tells us “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”

Today, let’s choose to go step by step and move by move with God – synchronized with Him as He leads the way. I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray that I would be led by Your spirit and walk in Your Spirit. Help me to be in sync while abiding in You. Give me the strength and awareness to take each step with You and not go my own way. Thank you for guiding me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
