Los Angeles Lakers’ guard, Kobe Bryant, is playing in his 20th and final NBA season. Announcing his retirement early has allowed him to embrace the entire farewell tour experience.

Honored and recognized by almost everyone along the way – from teammates to players and fans from other teams – he has received standing ovations, hugs, and video montages. Kobe has been shown respect and appreciation by everyone who has witnessed his career success and contributions to the game.

What I find interesting is how willing sports fans are to show reverence for players who “deserve” it, especially at the end of their careers. Although honor is wonderful when it comes to sports or holidays or our spouses and parents, do we hold our highest honor for the Creator of the world?

The Bible tells us in 1 Timothy 1:17 (ESV):To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Honoring soldiers, emergency workers, and athletes probably come easily for most of us, but how often do we really think about honoring God? Does the way we live and speak reveal the depth of our admiration, adoration, and appreciation for who God is and what He’s done for us?

Today, let’s be challenged to regard God with great respect, esteem, and reverence while reserving our ultimate honor for Him. I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, you are worthy of all my praise. Forgive me for not showing you the honor you deserve, but show me ways I can demonstrate my adoration and appreciation for who you are and everything you’ve done for me. Thank you for Jesus, in His name I pray, Amen.
