  1. Dwelling on the Past by Staff Writer, Luke Heaton

The 150th Open Championship is set to begin tomorrow. Beginning in 1860, The Open is the oldest tournament in the world. And if that isn’t enough to build excitement, the tournament is being held at what many consider to be the home of golf – The Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Jordan Spieth (in that order) are the current favorites to win this year’s competition. Down the list is the current champion and holder of the Claret Jug, Collin Morikawa, who has the 12th…

  2. “What’s the Price for Integrity?”

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads reading this! The U.S. Open is taking place this weekend at The Country Club near Boston and as the golf world watches to see who will win this Major, there’s an overshadowing storyline stealing attention. The new LIV Golf series has poached several well-known golfers such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, and Sergio Garcia. These golfers will still participate in the Majors they qualify for, but they’re no longer a member of the PGA Tour as a result of joining LIV Golf. There’s been…

  3. Fairway or the Water Hazard?

Yesterday’s PGA Championship provided golf fans with heartbreak and excitement. We love when a tournament comes down to the final shots with multiple guys in contention and that’s exactly what we saw. Justin Thomas pulled out the Major win after being seven strokes back to start the final round as he defeated Will Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff. Both finishes are a big deal as Thomas wins his second PGA Championship and Zalatoris becomes the runner-up for another Major. However, the most talked-about story of the tournament is how Mito…

  4. The Mulligan

Last night, my dad and I went to see the new movie, The Mulligan, which was very entertaining, powerful and inspiring. We both really enjoyed it! The movie uses the game of golf as the backdrop, while the story centers around the main character who is a successful businessman, workaholic, separated from his wife, and hated by his son. It’s based on the book, The Mulligan, written by former PGA touring pro, Wally Armstrong (a guest on The UNPACKIN’ it Podcast) and bestselling author, Ken Blanchard. Through the help of a retired golf pro (played by Pat…

  5. It Wasn’t Enough

Scottie Scheffler entered the Masters as the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, and after his dominating performance, left Augusta with the prestigious green jacket. He won his first major title, finishing 10-under for the tournament, and becoming the fifth player to win the Masters as the world’s No.1 ranked golfer. He has now won four of the last six tournaments he’s played in. Along with Scheffler’s amazing weekend, there were also impressive rounds, unbelievable shots, and memorable moments from other golfers in the field. But despite their best efforts, the other golfers weren’t good…

  6. Here to Win

The Masters is taking place right now and although there are some interesting golfers on the leaderboard, the story of this tournament once again is Tiger Woods. The five-time champion is back playing in a tournament for the first time in over 500 days. He experienced a life-threatening car crash in 2021 that resulted in severe injuries to his right leg, leading to a rod being inserted into his tibia and screws and pins put into his foot and ankle. It’s truly unbelievable that the 46-year old golfer is even out on…

  7. Are We Committed?

As sports fans, most of us are committed to cheering for our favorite teams through the good times and bad times. Lions, Browns, and Jets fans keep showing up regardless of their team’s record. We don’t sign contracts with our favorite teams, but we remain loyal nonetheless. When it comes to players, coaches, and front offices, there are constant concerns and speculation about the commitment level of everyone involved. Is a specific player committed to a team? Is a certain coach committed to sticking around? Are owners committed to doing what…

  8. 2021 BEST of UNPACK this…Responding to the Pressure

What a joy to watch the Masters with all of the intriguing stories and incredible players, yet what jumps out to me is the atmosphere of pressure that permeates throughout the tournament. There’s no denying that every golfer feels some level of pressure when they show up to Augusta. With more eyes on the players during the Masters, there’s a heightened intensity and with the allure of the tournament, there’s a stronger desire to win. Also, each player carries their own burdens onto the tee box and feels a personal weight…

  9. Maintaining Belief In All Circumstances

*Today’s devotional is written by Luke Heaton, UNPACKIN’ it’s Social Media Director and Podcast Co-Host. Tony Finau has won the PGA Tour Northern Trust Golf Tournament, ending a grueling drought of 1,975 days since his first win at the Puerto Rico Open in 2016. He battled down the stretch to prevail against premier names like Jon Rahm, and ultimately beat Cam Smith in a playoff. Finau has had to deal with strong criticism from the golfing world due to repeatedly coming up short in tournaments. Over the past five years,…

  10. Managing Emotions

*Today’s devotional is written by Luke Heaton, UNPACKIN’ it’s Social Media Director and Podcast Co-Host. Will Zalatoris was one of the more exciting young players in professional golf last season. He had eight top-ten finishes, including a solo 2nd place finish at the Masters. At just age 24, he’s ranked as the 29th best golfer in the world. What has made Zalatoris and other golfers successful is not just the ability to hit incredible shots, but the maturity to respond well to the wide array of emotions experienced throughout the tournament….
